Nursery Construction for the 2026 Habanero Program
During the second week of our 2026 habanero program, our focus shifted from the field to the nursery—the birthplace of every healthy pepper plant we grow.
The video below captures the full nursery development process, from construction to fumigation and finally the setup of nursery trays. It offers a clear look at the careful work that goes into preparing strong, disease‑free seedlings.
A well‑built nursery is the heart of any successful pepper program. While the field provides the space for growth, the nursery provides the controlled environment where life begins. This week, our team completed the construction of a clean, secure, and well‑ventilated nursery structure designed to protect young seedlings from pests, harsh weather, and soil‑borne diseases.
Once the structure was completed, we moved into fumigation. This step is essential. Fumigation eliminates harmful pathogens, insects, and fungi that could threaten germination or early seedling development. By sterilizing the nursery environment, we ensure that every seed has the best possible chance to sprout and grow without stress.
After fumigation, we prepared the nursery beds. Instead of planting directly into the soil, we use trays filled with a carefully mixed growing medium. This approach allows us to control moisture, improve aeration, and reduce the risk of contamination. Each tray is filled evenly and arranged neatly to maximize space and ensure uniform growth.
With the trays in place, the nursery is now ready for seeding. This marks a major milestone in our program. The work done in Week 2 sets the stage for strong germination, healthy seedlings, and ultimately a productive field once transplanting begins.
Nursery construction, fumigation, and tray preparation may seem like behind‑the‑scenes tasks, but they are some of the most important steps in modern pepper production. They reflect our commitment to precision, plant health, and long‑term yield success.
